A group of MSc GMRM students visited the Fish Marketing Organization (FMO) in Aberdeen on the morning of 31 March 2026. They toured the facilities, learned about FMO’s history and wholesale operations, and were excited to see the diversity of locally landed and imported marine fish.
In the afternoon they went to Tung Lung Chau mariculture demonstration farm. This modern mariculture demonstration farm at the Tung Lung Chau Fish Culture Zone is established by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). It aims to guide the local mariculture industry move towards modern and sustainable operations so that the trade can enhance its overall competitiveness.
Students were able to walk on the fish raft and explore its modernized technology and management, such as a real-time surveillance system, a real-time water quality monitoring system, an automated feeding system and a solar and wind power generation system. Through communicating with the representatives of AFCD, students had a deeper understanding about sustainable or high-value-added fishing operations, the materials used for building the mariculture demonstration farm, and the overall structure of the demonstration farm.

Recently, our students had an incredible opportunity to visit the Mai Po Nature Reserve! WWF staff welcomed the group, sharing fascinating insights into their daily operations, team structures, and potential career opportunities in conservation. Along with hearing about WWF's latest research projects, students were treated to an exclusive tour of the reserve's restricted areas. The group enjoyed bird watching, walking along the iconic floating bridges that span the wetlands, and exploring the traditional gei wai (shrimp ponds). It was a fantastic, hands-on experience where students learned how gei wai water levels are managed to sustain the ecosystem, and even discovered how resident water buffaloes act as natural weed controllers. We had a fun and highly educational time!

The OCES5402 course took students on a visit to Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park on 11 March 2026, offering a meaningful glimpse into one of Hong Kong’s earliest marine protected areas. Hoi Ha Wan is home to more than 60 coral species and over 120 fish species, making it one of the region’s most ecologically rich coastal habitats. We enjoyed a relaxing glass-bottom boat tour, which allowed us to observe corals and marine life up close. Through a sensory game, we gained deeper insight into how coral communities function and interact with their environment. At the Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre laboratory, we also learned how artificial coral planting contributes to ongoing conservation efforts.

On 6 February 2026, our OCES5402 class visited the Shen Kuo Hao research vessel, and it was a very inspiring experience. During the trip, we looked at deep‑sea science displays, saw models used for ocean surveys, and learned what the research crew does every day. Getting close to real scientific tools and submersible machines helped our students understand how they work. The visit made marine exploration and ocean technology feel more real and increased their interest in these areas.

As an internationally important port city, maritime navigation is an important element in marine resources management in Hong Kong In our OCES5402 field visit, we embarked on a boat from the Tsim Sha Tsui public pier to the Government Dockyard. Upon arrival, we learned about the essential role of the Aids to Navigation and Mooring Unit (ANMU) in maintaining safe navigation in Hong Kong waters. ANMU ensures safe movement of vessels into and out of our port, adhering to international guidelines.
After our informative visit to the dockyard, we set sail for Green Island Lighthouse, spending around two hours there. This historic site features two lighthouses—the old one was built in 1875 and the new one in 1904—both integral to Hong Kong's maritime history. The lighthouses have guided countless vessels for over a century.
This field visit enriched our understanding of maritime navigation and the historical significance of lighthouses in Hong Kong, and their connection to effective marine resource management. It was a unique opportunity to connect with our coastal heritage while enjoying the scenic beauty of our waters.

On 12 February 2025, a group of MSc GMRM students went on a half-day field trip to the High Island Reservoir East Dam, a beautiful spot in the Hong Kong Geopark. We saw the amazing hexagonal rock columns, which formed 140 million years ago from volcanic activity. While walking along the High Island Geo Trail, we admired the unique S-shaped rock formations and learned how they were created. This experience helped us appreciate the beauty of nature and the processes that shape our landscape.

On 14 April 2024, students from the MSc in Global Marine Resources Management Program visited the Lau Fau Shan Oyster Farm for an educational field trip. Located in Lau Fau Shan, Hong Kong, the trip aimed to provide students with insights into local aquaculture and the challenges faced by oyster farmers. Interactions with the farmers allowed students to learn about oyster cultivation techniques, environmental conditions, and the life cycle of oysters. Discussions also focused on the difficulties related to environmental changes, water quality, and market demands. Drawing on their marine knowledge, students explored possibilities for enhancing oyster harvest and sustainability. The visit not only expanded students' understanding of the industry but also fostered connections and potential collaborations with local stakeholders in the pursuit of sustainable development in oyster farming.
