The marine environment is the largest ecosystem on our planet. It provides essential ecological services to all living things and a large variety of goods to human society. As the resources in the terrestrial environment continue to deplete, marine sources are key for humanity’s future. There is a worldwide consensus that marine resources need to be properly managed to sustain the increasing needs of human society. However, the sustainable exploitation and management of marine resources is a complex issue that can only be tackled by using cross-disciplinary knowledge and skill sets. In addition, marine resources exploration and utilization often involve international stakeholders. There has been an increasing demand for talent in the field with international exposure and global vision. However, marine resources management programs that provide international exposure are rare. Therefore, professionals that have been trained in a multicultural and cross-national setting will be highly competitive.

MSc Global Marine Resources Management is a double award programme co-delivered by the Department of Ocean Science, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and the School of Ocean and Earth Science, the University of Southampton (UoS). Being strategic partners in marine research, the newly developed programme aims to deliver research-led teaching and equip students with the cross-disciplinary knowledge and multi-national experience needed to tackle complex global issues in the sustainable utilization of marine resources. The learning activities will involve lecture courses and field excursions in both Hong Kong and Southampton, and individual research projects jointly supervised by HKUST and the University of Southampton faculty.

The programme will prepare students for careers or future studies in the fields of marine resources management, marine resources exploration, oceanography, environmental conservation, etc. A wide range of career opportunities are available for successful students in academia, private entities, NGOs and governmental agencies. As a collaborative program, students will have the opportunities to build professional networks in Hong Kong, Southampton, and beyond.
